Google Notes: New Print Button and Font Size Selection
In response to a few user requests, I've added the ability to resize the font and print the notepad contents. Also, I'm updating my links to use the new "Add to Google" buttons. Don't forget, in addition to decreasing your font size, you can fit more notes in by selecting a larger notepad size. The default one hosted by Google is the medium notepad.
Small Notepad
Medium Notepad
Large Notepad
Finally, I'd like to just say thanks to everyone using Google Notes. It's been fun so far, and I've learned quite a bit in the process of building and maintaining it. It's rewarding to know that so many people are benefitting from it. In fact, the number of accounts (and regular users, in general) has doubled within the last month. I don't know if it's word of mouth, Google making it easier to add modules, or even a "halo effect" from Google Calendar being released this month, but somehow there rate of new users is continuing to increase. Below is a graph showing the lastest usage statistics.

Could you include an option to remove the Print button and associated text? All I am looking for is a text entry box really...
Thanks,
Steve
No problem. I've now changed the default to where if you have selected "hide timestamp" it will hide both the print button and the text, in addition to converting the space at the bottom into usable text box.
I use google notes daily, I was so inspired I made an internet version of it. A little more scetchy but still working on it. http://keepmynotes.com also the new feature you have added is awsome. Keep it up!
Adrik, your site looks promising so far. I've fielded questions regarding security and your site may be a good answer for that, seeing as how you use encrypted passwords. I look forward to seeing how your site develops in the future.
I REALLY like this addition on my google page, now my homework is available worldwide!! :)
Yep, it's available worldwide if that's what you want. All you have to do is publicize your email/keyword combination, and anyone can have a look. :)
As I mentioned before, it was designed this way for convenience over bullet-proof security. If I used encrypted passwords, I'd need to add a login screen, which detracts from the express goal of convenience.
Additionally, the email/keyword approach allows you to have multiple notepads and even share them with others (i.e. it's a feature, not a bug).
I noticed something lately. It doesn't seem like the google notes part of the page doesn't want to load up every time. Although there's probably not much you can do about this, I thought I should still tell you.
I had noticed that too and I wondered if it was just me. Apparently there was a glitch in the matrix. :)
I had mad a small change to fix alignment issues (it rendered some things out-of-bounds in IE) and tried to get away without a server reboot. I'm guessing that was the problem, so the server has now been rebooted. If you notice the problem any more, let me know and I'll give it another look.
Thanks for the feedback!
-David
Yeah, you fixed the problem alright! (As far as I can see, only time will tell..)
Yeah, I should watch the Matrix sometime too, but I have about 250 math problems to do :( (lousy school)
I've changed the setting for the notepads so that empty notepad contents are not saved. The rationale behind this is explained here
Hi,
Are you aware that your module doesn't seem to work in google pages experimental gadget section ?
It's a shame because you are in the first page of standart gadgets !!!
if you want to test it, visit http://pages.google.com/ and sign-in
go to the site settings and enable experimental features ...
If you need some information contact me within the month at : 56533v5nupmb1ou@jetable.org

As of yesterday or so, I became aware that Google Notes was not working properly on the Google Desktop as a Google Gadget. I started looking into it a little bit, but haven't gotten too far yet. With your recent comment, I'm now also aware of Google Pages, and module seems to have similar problems there as well. I don't yet know what the problem is, but I'll see if I can get to the root of it. My guess is that it's related to the type of module--I know of at least one other module developer with similar problems.
Thank you very much for keeping me informed about these issues. Please do let me know about anything that may help get these things fixed, and in the meantime, I'll see what I can do.

I just found your little wotsit for the google personal homepage but cant seem to get it to work.
It comes up with "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" type error after i put in my email & so on.
Cant see where i could be going wrong. Im guessing its being http://infinityis.rahga.com is down too?
Anywho, looks good. cant wait to get it working. My memory sucks :)
To my knowledge, there haven't been any recent outages with Google Notes. If you are unable to get it working, try visiting infinityis.rahga.com
If that webpage doesn't come up, then something is wrong--either the site is down temporarily or your ISP has blocked a range of IP addresses that include the one used for Google Notes. In either case, feel free to email me directly to verify if the site is up. If it is up and you still can't get it to work, it may be worthwhile to try connecting from a different location (home, school, work, or a friend's house).
Also, it probably goes without saying, but Google Notes works with most modern browsers. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work for browsers on mobile devices like PDAs and cell phones (or at least not mine).
In both IE and FireFox the text area is larger taller than the widget height, so the print icon does not even show. And there is no scrollbar to scroll down to see it, I can only use the Tab button to get to it. Is there a way to specify the height of the widget box or the height of the text area? I tried small, medium and large versions and have the same problem in all of them. Thanks!
I talked with the guys at Google regarding the change in width and height parameters, and I've updated the code so it should display properly now (in most browsers). Additionally, the new code is flexible enough to handle window resizing (as opposed to before, when the width was fixed).
Thanks for your patience while the problem was being fixed.
What do I do if my notes are suddenly not there? I thought you have a safety feature so they do not get deleted....but where are they? Thanks...christine17
Response from David: Problem resolved (the notes were not lost). If anyone else notices their notes are missing, it is recommended that you try refreshing the page. If the notepad appears empty, do not type anything into the notepad, as this will overwrite any notes stored on the server. The key thing to remember is that an empty notepad will never be saved. Thanks!

?
Oh, never mind... mine just haven't come back up yet.
I find your Notes Google app to be very useful... nice work and thankyou.
Over the last few days I have peridocally gotten this page loading in my notes section:

Do you have hosting problems or are you discontinuing support for this?
Yesterday morning the domain name temporaritly expired. It was quickly renewed, but unfortunately it usually takes a day or two for the change to propogate to all the root servers. Most people should be able to access their notes at this time, and the few who can't should be able to relatively soon.
No notepad contents have been lost. Sorry about the problem, and thanks for your patience.
Hi,
I love Google notes and the way it can sync on Google Desktop and Personalized Homepage.
Just noticed though that you don't seem to be able to paste into the Desktop version? I have tried the usual ctrl-V to no effect. Am I doing something wrong?
If not, any chance this feature could be added? :-) Often I like to paste messages from my web browser for reference.
Thanks!
Hello, I don't know if anything has been recently done.. but I use this module for notes in Japanese. Suddenly the encoding is messed up making the notes that I put in un-readable..
As far as pasting into the Google Desktop version of the notepad, I'm not sure why it doesn't work, except to say that...it probably should. Maybe Google will make a change someday that allows it, because I don't see a means of fixing it on my end.
With respect to the Japanese notes, it should be working correctly now. We moved everything to a different server earlier this week and forgot to turn on the UTF-8 encoding by default. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
Hello, I still cannot see my notes. Encoding is still messed up. :(
Hi! My "google notes" isn't working any more, it simply shows an empty white box instead of the notes, and when I try to access the xml file of the service (http://infinityis.rahga.com/smallnotes.xml) , the server responds with an "object not found" message.
Yeah, the hosting service for Google Notes has been experiencing some unfortunate downtime this week. They're making some changes, but your notes are still there, albeit unaccessible for the time being. I've been assured that things will come back online relatively soon.
Sorry for the interruption in service...
Just tried to load your module but am getting a "Not Found" error message. Am I doing something wrong?
Everything is back online now. Technically, after replacing the server that Google Notes wound up killing, we had to find something better than mod-fastcgi for keeping the app online in between http requests. mod-fcgid works great for reqular loads and shared sites, not so much when there are 100 requests per minute. We deployed on mod-scgi instead, and it seems to be working fine so far.
